IMM’s Executive Director, Maria do Carmo Fonseca, was the recipient of the 2013 Dona Antonia Ferreira Award distinguishing a Portuguese female personality with "personal and professional values" similar to those of Antónia Adelaide Ferreira, a woman that profoundly marked the development of the Douro region in the XIX century.

"The extreme dedication to research and study of diseases caused by genetic modifications, including cancer, with the aim of contributing to the development of new therapeutic strategies, as well as the intense activity as the author of original scientific articles published in the most prestigious journals, were some of the qualities of Maria do Carmo Fonseca valued by the jury", the organization clarified.

This was the 25th edition of the award established by the family of Dona Antonia Adelaide Ferreira and SOGRAPE. Maria do Carmo Fonseca is also full professor at the School of Medicine of Lisbon University and was awarded Prémio Pessoa in 2010.
