Cognitive Science

Cognitive Science undertakes the scientific study of cognition - brain, mind and behavior - through the integration and fostering of concepts and contributions of several areas from Psychology, Neuroscience, Artificial Intelligence, Philosophy, Linguistics, Evolutionary Biology, Anthropology and other Social Sciences, and the application of methods from Computer Science, Mathematics and Physics.

Given its interdisciplinary nature, Cognitive Science calls for a post-graduate program that bridges knowledge gained from the exact sciences, life sciences and the humanities within a strong scientific approach. Taking into account the wide range of competences developed at its different Faculties and Departments as well as the excellence of the results obtained by its many research centers, the University of Lisbon has outstanding conditions to offer a high quality master studies in Cognitive Science.

This Masters Program in Cognitive Science of the University of Lisbon has as its primary goal to train a new generation of experts who can combine its various disciplines into an integrated science of cognition, mind and brain, as well as explore the application of the knowledge being generated in this domain.

Skills: Conception, design, development, operation and management of services and systems to support cognitive activities, on the basis of an interdisciplinary analysis of mind and brain, by integrating results from several areas of Psychology, Neuroscience, Evolutive Biology, Linguistics, Philosophy, Anthropology and other social sciences, and by means of the application of methods from Computer Science, Mathematics and Physics. Cognitive Science benefits from the push by new brain imagiology techniques, with a great potential in terms of the developmemt of applications in the domain of health, motor and cognitive proesthetics, education, as well as in terms of the development of better instruments to support communication and decision. The job market offers chances around the language and interaction technologies, complex problems resolution, virtual reality construction, ergonomics, information retrieval and opinion analysis, and research in the realms of the mind and the brain.

Objectives

O ciclo de estudos conducente ao grau de mestre em Ciência Cognitiva visa proporcionar formação geral em Ciência Cognitiva numa perspectiva multidisciplinar através de um curso de formação avançada (1 ano e 1 semestre) seguido de 1 ano de trabalho de investigação científica conducente à elaboração de uma dissertação original ao nível do mestrado (o 1 semestre do 2 ano inclui o final do curso de formação avançada e o começo da elaboração da dissertação). O aspecto multidisciplinar é central no ciclo de estudos e reflecte-se depois na sua organização interna e estrutura curricular.

  • Technological companies, of consultancy and auditing;
  • Companies with advanced systems of interaction with users;

  • Institutions in the hospital sector;
  • Laboratories of research and development;
  • Higher education and research institutions, etc.

 

Access conditions

Candidates will be admitted to enrolment:

  1. Holders of a bachelor's degree or legal equivalent;
  2. Holders of a foreign higher academic degree, awarded following a 1st cycle of studies organised in accordance with the principles of the Bologna Process by a state adhering to this Process;
  3. Holders of a foreign higher academic degree that is recognised as meeting the objectives of a bachelor's degree by the Master's Scientific Committee.

Course organised together with the Faculdade de Psicologia, Faculdade de Letras and Faculdade de Ciências - Universidade de Lisboa.

 

Planned timetable

Classes are scheduled to start in the 2nd half of September, every Tuesday from 9.00 to 19.00 and every Thursday from 13.00 to 19.00.
