Vision
Dedication to high-quality teaching and research in service of FMUL.
Teaching
The Autonomous Disciplinary Area of Biostatistics is the unit responsible for teaching biostatistics to students at the Faculty of Medicine across all levels. This includes the introductory course for first-year students in the Integrated Master’s Degree in Medicine, within Module III.II; biostatistics courses in the Bachelor’s Degree in Nutritional Sciences; and biostatistics modules in various doctoral programs and postgraduate courses offered by the Lisbon Academic Medical Center (CAML). As such, this unit has a strong pedagogical focus.
Research
To ensure continuous updates and maximize existing capabilities, the Autonomous Disciplinary Area of Biostatistics, through the Biomathematics Laboratory, is also involved in research projects. This includes providing methodological support and co-supervising Integrated Master’s theses.
In addition, the unit is actively engaged in clinical research with physicians/researchers from ULS Santa Maria and other institutions. The Biomathematics Laboratory maintains national and international collaborations in the fields of basic biomedical research and clinical research.
Biostatistical Support Office
Biomedical research is associated with the generation of complex data, which requires appropriate quantitative analysis. In many cases, this analysis should be conducted or at least overseen by researchers with specific expertise.
To address this need, a statistical support office was established, equipped with competencies in the most relevant areas for medical research, particularly that conducted within the Lisbon Academic Medical Center (CAML).
Coordination
Professor Ruy Ribeiro (Biomathematics Laboratory)
Professor Paulo Nogueira (Biomathematics Laboratory)
Email: apoiobiostat@medicina.ulisboa.pt
This support office is open to the entire CAML community to address the following needs:
1. Ad-hoc support: For example, answering questions, guiding appropriate analytical approaches, or providing minimal assistance with statistical software.
Schedule
Tuesdays from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM (by appointment via email at apoiobiostat@medicina.ulisboa.pt)
2. Scientific collaborations: Early involvement in scientific studies in a collaborative capacity, including potential project funding, acknowledgment in scientific publications, and conference presentations.
3. Service provision: Data analysis on a paid service basis, depending on the complexity of the analysis and the time required.
4. Training sessions: Occasional organization of statistical training sessions for physicians and researchers, for example, in collaboration with Clinical (or other) Departments at ULS Santa Maria.
Areas of Expertise
Considering the variety of expected research projects, the main areas of need for the CAML community are anticipated to include*:
a. Design of experimental protocols, including sample size and power calculations;
b. Data organization for statistical analysis;
c. Descriptive data analysis;
d. Parametric and non-parametric tests for sample comparison;
e. Regression (including generalized linear models);
f. Logistic regression;
g. Contingency tables;
h. Risk analysis and odds ratios;
i. Survival analysis and Cox regression;
j. Meta-analysis;
l. Questionnaire design;
m. Statistical software usage.
* Researchers with questions in some of these areas may be referred to colleagues with more specialized expertise.
