This area serves as a support space for the teaching, learning, and research activities of the Academic Center of Medicine of Lisbon (CAML), promoting the development of skills that enable individuals to effectively locate, evaluate, and use the necessary information from the resources available in the Library-CDI: information literacy skills, following international best practices.

The Library-CDI collaborates in the undergraduate and postgraduate training of the Lisbon School of Medicine (FMUL), in coordination with various Curricular Units, the Department of Medical Education, the Research Support Office, and the Student Support Office.

To request a training session or for any clarification regarding this area, please send a message to bibl.formacao@medicina.ulisboa.pt

The Library originated from the Surgical Bookstore of the School of Surgery, founded in 1815, which operated in the Royal Hospital of São José. It has a vast and valuable collection of historically significant books, comprising approximately 4,000 volumes. This collection is particularly rich in works from the 16th to the 19th centuries, sourced from the archives of defunct convent bookstores and significant bequests, such as that of Dr. Simão José Fernandes.

In collaboration with the University of Lisbon’s "UL Digital" project, the Library launched an initiative for Document Digitization and Preservation funded by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.

Digitalized Rare Books

The Library of the Lisbon School of Medicine originated in 1815 at the Surgical Bookstore of the School of Surgery, located in the Hospital de S. José, preceding the very creation of the Royal School of Surgery in 1825.

The assistants and practitioners enrolled in the Anatomy and Surgery classes requested the creation of a medical library from Prince Regent D. João, which would hold essential manuals for their studies by authors such as Santucci, Cullen, Dufau, Soares Franco, Sant’ana, and others.

In 1834, the liberal wave led to the dissolution of convents and monasteries, transferring part of the medical books from their valuable collections to the Library of the Medical-Surgical School.

In 1845, this library was enriched by the legacy of the physician Simão José Fernandes (4,000 books), which included a precious collection of rare books.

In 1910/11, the Library was moved to a new building constructed in Campo de Santana for the Medical-Surgical School (which would henceforth be known as the Lisbon School of Medicine).

In 1954, the Library was again relocated to the building of the Santa Maria (School) Hospital, where it remains to this day.

Proud of its past but with an eye on the future, the Library-CDI aims to contribute to enhancing the quality and competitiveness of teaching/learning and research, aligning its strategic actions with the goals defined for the FMUL and in accordance with the levels of excellence and quality promoted by ULisboa.
