World Blood Donor day

It is due to the generosity of thousands of blood donors that in Portugal we have more than 300,000 blood samples per year, which are in turn processed into components, Erythrocytes concentrates, Plasma and Platelets. Subsequently, Plasma is used to obtain blood products such as albumin, immunoglobulins, as well as concentrates of specific clotting factors.

At Santa Maria Hospital, we have thousands of young donors, especially medical students who over the years have collaborated in this effort, whom I thank here and highlight their civic attitude of solidarity and humanism.

Our hospital carries out around 30,000 transfusions to our patients a year of blood components that are vital, namely in the surgical and oncological areas.

Thanks to our kind blood donors.

I am confident that more and more we will have young medical student donors who, with this act of solidarity, follow the humanist principles that characterize and ennoble the medical art!
