Faculty of Medicine Day

The commemoration of the Faculty of Medicine Day took place this year, on September 17th, and marked the Opening of the 2018/2019 Academic Year.
The event, held at the João Lobo Antunes Grand Auditorium, in the Egas Moniz Building, began at 10:00 a.m. with a brief performance by the Lisbon Medical Choir and the Lisbon Medical Orchestra.
Next, were by the speeches of Prof. Dr. Fausto J. Pinto, Director of FMUL, who, in addition to welcoming the students who arrived this year to the Faculty, mentioned the various challenges and projects that involve the Faculty, also looking back on the past year. Andreia Daniel, student and President of AEFML, mentioned the challenges medical students face as well as her personal experience over the past five years. Prof. Dr. António Feijó, Vice-Dean of the University of Lisbon shared a humanist view of the medical profession with the audience.
At 11:00 am, Dr. Maria Amélia Ferreira, Director of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto, presented a Conference on the "Challenges of education and training in medicine: Change, Uncertainty and Narrative". The challenges facing medical education in the present and the near future, the impact of scientific and technological development in the medical profession, the exchange of knowledge and interdisciplinary practice, the humanist aspect, all these aspects have been the object of an in-depth reflection. This conference also marked the beginning of an institutional collaboration in hopes of greater proximity between the Faculties of Medicine of the Universities of Lisbon and Porto.
Followed by a tribute to retired Professors; new Full Professors; new Associate Professors; new Professors; new PhDs; Professors with 25 years of service; non-teaching employees with 25 years of service; and doctors celebrating 50 years of Bachelor's Degree.
The ceremony ended with the presentation of the "Academic Awards, Diploma of Merit and the FMUL/CGD Award of Excellence (see more information on the awards here).
