The PhD grants awarded by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) are intended for graduates, Masters students or people with a different academic degree and who have been accepted onto a PhD course in a university in Portugal or abroad.

At the moment the FMUL has 177 students enrolled in PhD courses, distributed over three fields: Biomedical Sciences 94 (with 58 receiving a grant), Medicine 47 (4 grant students) and Health Sciences and Technologies (11 of them on grants).
