More And Better
To better know the artistic heritage of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon
The magazine Midas: Museus e Estudos Interdisciplinares publishes, in its 9th issue of 2018, the article “Brief Reflection on the artistic heritage of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon”,
by Ana Mehnert Pascoal, which we have published here. There are few studies on the artistic heritage of the University and, in particular, on the FMUL in recent years, so we welcome this publication, which we strongly recommend reading.
The Newsletter contacted the author, who told us by way of contextualising: "The first studies I did on university heritage correspond to my master's thesis about the artistic heritage integrated in the buildings of architect Porfírio Pardal Monteiro for the University City of Lisbon, held at the Faculty of Letters of the University of Lisbon (2011)".
This is a job that continued "within the framework of the Commemorations of the Centennial of the University of Lisbon in 2011", when Ana Mehnert Pascoal, as a scholarship holder, joined a team dedicated to the Survey of the Historical, Scientific and Artistic Heritage of the University of Lisbon, coordinated by Doctor Marta C. Lourenço. "Catarina Teixeira holds a degree in Conservation and Restoration and a Master's degree in Museology (with a dissertation on the survey project) and is also part of the team. This work consisted of the identification of all heritage nuclei, as much of architectonic character, as about collections and objects of art, science and technology existing at the University. It was published in the book coordinated by Marta C. Lourenço and Maria João Neto, entitled Património da Universidade de Lisboa. Ciência e Arte (Tinta-da-china editions, 2011)".
Ana Mehnert Pascoal tells us: "This work was continued in the context of the Science and Technology Management Grant, funded by the FCT, which I have benefited from at the National Museum of Natural History and Science/University Museums of Lisbon (MUHNAC) between 2011 and 2017. The article published in the MIDAS magazine comes from the inventory and research made during the validity of the scholarship, continuing the work started during the 2011 survey. At this time, I also carried out research on the building in which the Faculty of Medicine is located, the Santa Maria School Hospital, having participated in conferences and publication of articles (...)"
The author recalls that during this period, "MUHNAC also established a partnership with the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon, receiving a significant group of medical collections for its safeguarding, study and exhibition.
Between 2015 and 2016, regarding the merger of the University of Lisbon with the Technical University of Lisbon, a new survey of the heritage was carried out, whose team I was also a part of. The team, coordinated by Marta C. Lourenço, also had Inês Gomes (project grantee), and the participation of David Felismino, Catarina Teixeira and Hugo Silva (who carried out a master's degree report on routes of visits to the University's heritage).
Regarding the heritage of the former University of Lisbon, the data for 2011 was updated. It also gave rise to a book, coordinated by Marta C. Lourenço and edited by the University of Lisbon in 2016, titled Universidade de Lisboa: Museus, Colecções e Património. A reflection on the two surveys can be found in the following article, co-authored by Catarina Teixeira, now Conservative-Restorer of MUHNAC".
