More And Better
Doctors and Society: For a History of Medicine in Portugal in the 20th century)
The work Médicos e Sociedade: Para uma História da Medicina em Portugal no séc. XX (Doctors and Society: For a History of Medicine in Portugal in the 20th century), coordinated by António Barros Veloso, recently published by the publishing house By the Book and launched on 9 November at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, fills a gap in the bibliography on the history of medicine in Portugal.
The various chapters were written by distinguished specialists and the preface is authored by Henrique Leitão, from the History of Science Centre of the University of Lisbon. The edition is the responsibility of the aforementioned António Barros Veloso, Henrique Leitão and also Luís Damas Moura.
Among dozens of authors, including doctors, historians and sociologists, among others, we find Professor João Lobo Antunes, who wrote a chapter on Egas Moniz and on the origin of neurosurgery in Portugal (it was also one of his last works before dying, in 2016). Francisco George wrote about the Spanish Flu and João Moreira dos Santos about the persecution of doctors by the Estado Novo.
