Presentation of the Chemistry College of the ULisboa
On 27 October, the University of Lisbon officially launched the Chemistry College.
On the same occasion, the ULisboa/Santander Universities Scientific Awards were granted to researchers who have published the most in recent years in some areas of Engineering, Human Kinetics and Agronomy.
The new Chemistry College integrates numerous teachers and researchers from different schools of the University of Lisbon, which, together, encompass the disciplines of the area of chemistry.
The Rectory of the University of Lisbon will contribute towards the funding of the college for a period of three years, in a monitored way, after which it is expected that, like the Colleges that preceded it, it has acquired financial autonomy to function. This contribution can be supplemented by other sources of funding resulting from projects in which the school will participate.
During the process of creation of the University of Lisbon, the goal to create new internal organization levels to encourage synergies and collaboration between several kinds of knowledge was established, without questioning the traditional structure. One way to substantiate this new dimension has been the creation of the Colleges, alongside other more limited initiatives, but of equal importance, including: the execution of research projects, cooperation projects with external entities, new training opportunities, and coordination of projects in areas common to several schools.
The Colleges are multiple research and trans-disciplinary units of the university that also encompass teaching, based on cooperation between lecturers and researchers from different schools and focusing on joint initiatives which, due to their cross-cutting nature, can benefit from the interaction of the members. This is indeed its main function: to promote collaboration between teachers and researchers from different schools of the university around a common initiative or the development of new cross-cutting areas of knowledge.
