Conference HIV-2: the forgotten AIDS virus
The Conference "HIV-2: the forgotten AIDS virus" was held last Saturday, April 5, in the Grand Auditorium of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon.
Among the dignitaries in attendance were Health Minister Paulo Macedo and Health Director General Francisco George, MD.
The Conference brought together national and international specialists and provided a retrospective review of the evolution of HIV-2 in Portugal and around the world, focusing on a range of areas, from basic science to clinical science and from the origin of the virus to the proposal of therapeutic recommendations.
Owing to its historical connections (among which participation in the discovery of the disease is included) and the population exchange with the most affected regions, namely a number of Portuguese-speaking African countries, Portugal presents the highest rate of HIV-2 infection outside the African continent. Hence the importance of holding and participating in this event.
Due to the subject matter and quality of its actors, this Conference is deemed a highlight of the initiatives of the Campaign "Portugal HIV/AIDS Campaign -30 years: reflecting and acting".
