Last Lesson of Professor Bugalho de Almeida
The last lesson given by Professor A. Bugalho de Almeida was held on 23 July 2012 at the Aula Magna of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon.
The event was attended by many lecturers, doctors, students and colleagues of the Professor who have followed his long career at the North Lisbon Hospital Centre and at the Faculty of Medicine. Vice-Rector António Vasconcelos Tavares, Professor Fernandes e Fernandes, Professor Lobo Antunes, Professor Correia da Cunha, Professor Rui Victorino, and Professor Miguel Oliveira da Silva attended the event, among others.
The date chosen for the last lesson symbolises the 78th anniversary of the setting up of the Lisbon University Clinic by Decree-Law no. 24 205 of 23 July 1934.
Professor Fernandes e Fernandes, Director of FMUL, delivered the first speech, highlighting the milestone that the last lesson of a professor represents, someone “ (…) he will always remember as a Friend, a Clinician and an Academic committed to the development of his field of action (...)”.
This was followed by the tribute by Professor Correia da Cunha, President of the Board of CHLN-EPE, who mentioned the importance and the quality of the Pneumology Department, which Professor Bugalho de Almeida directed since 1998
The topic of the last lesson was “The Pneumology University Clinic. Eight Decades of Education, Research and Assistance”, in which the Professor, with great emotion and enthusiasm, spoke of the last 78 years and of the several aspects of the clinic that stemmed from “the recognized need to teach about respiratory diseases”, and which now says farewell to a great director and professor.
