Picture of Candidate’s Day in FMUL 2012
Who are the young students with the ambition of becoming doctors who visited us during Candidate’s Day? What is their opinion of that day?
On Candidate’s Day – Study Medicine at FMUL – held on 23 March, 116 young people visited us, mostly female with a mean age of 18 years who, for the most part, attend public schools in the districts of Lisbon and Setúbal. Curiously, most have a relative who is working in the field of health, particularly in the area of medicine. The main reasons for choosing the Integrated Master Degree in Medicine is their interest in the medical field and because it is vital to society. The main motive for choosing FMUL relates to the quality of the education offered, the syllabus and its prestige as an institution.
Most participants became aware of the event through their teachers and decided to attend, especially to become familiar with the facilities and to obtain information to inform their choice.
On this day packed with activities, participants had the opportunity to visit the places where the teaching and learning takes place, as well as where research is conducted. They met students and researchers from FMUL and from the Institute of Molecular Medicine (IMM), attended presentations on the Integrated Master Degree in Medicine and on research carried out at FMUL, and learned about the various aspects of medicine (clinical, teaching and research). In addition, they learned about clinical practice in Africa. FMUL’s students shared their research and Erasmus mobility experiences with participants, who also met representatives of the Student’s Association of FMUL.
The participants’ opinion on the day was very positive, and they expressed their satisfaction with the syllabus, the organization and the logistics. They felt it was very important to obtain information about access requirements, to see FMUL’s facilities, have a glimpse of academic life, and interact with lecturers, researchers and students. As the main strong point, they highlighted the faculty premises (learning and teaching areas) and the IMM. In their opinion, the main weakness was the formation of the groups in the visits.
Additional information about the participants and their opinion on the Day of the Candidate can be found at the event’s official page or at FMUL’s Portal
