Women’s satisfaction with care in the Neonatology Unit of the Santa Maria Hospital
Abstract Patients’ satisfaction is an indicator of the quality of care, and its evaluation allows us to improve medical practice. This article intends to evaluate the satisfaction and perceived quality by the users of the Neonatology Unit of the Santa Maria Hospital in Lisbon, Portugal. For that purpose a transversal and analytical study was undertaken, and the sample used consisted of all users admitted to that unit between May and June 2007 that agreed to answer to a questionnaire (n = 110). The results showed that the mean age of the users was 30,1 years and that globally the samples’ educational level was high. The degree of global satisfaction is high, with almost the entire sample (99,1%) being satisfied or very satisfied, although some areas of relative dissatisfaction were identified; namely in what refers to the lodging (meals, wards, restrooms, etc.) and aspects related to the visits (schedule and ease of accompaniment by the relatives). When it comes to the health professionals, the most criticized were the auxiliary staff, while the users were globally satisfied with the medical and nursing staff. We conclude that despite global satisfaction, in order to improve the quality of care, it seems useful to take some action in the areas where dissatisfaction was noticed.
Key-words Patient satisfaction; Neonatology.
