More And Better
MOVE-TE (MOVE YOURSELF) PROJECT
For our readers who are still unfamiliar with this project, in this edition we bring to you an independent section of the Student Association of the Faculty of Medicine of Lisbon, the Project MOVE-TE (MOVE YOURSELF). This initiative was started in 2008 by a few faculty students and its main goal is to promote national and international volunteer work, focusing on health work.
The project addresses several areas, but cardiovascular screenings and collaboration with other national volunteering organizations, such as Associação Conversa Amiga, Associação Vida e Paz and Associação Coração Amarelo figure prominently.
The MOVE-TE project is also involved in several activities related to the academic environment of the Faculty of Medicine of Lisbon, such as the Erasmus Party and student tunas evening, the Magusto (Chestnut party) and the selling of raffles for the Cabaz dos Reis (Kings Basket) and Cabaz Olímpico (Olympic Basket).
The group of volunteers is formed by over forty students of the Faculty of Medicine of Lisbon who are committed to raising the awareness of all students to volunteer work, encouraging all those who are interested about the project to be involved in the activities carried out by the
Project.
In 2010, five volunteers participated in international missions, in partnership with Doctors of the World, in Sao Tome and Principe, Guinea and Eastern Timor. The costs of the Mission are covered by this project, which carries out activities such as those described above and receives funding from whoever wishes to help the project.
Right now, eight volunteers are preparing to participate in international missions in the summer, for one to two months, in Sao Tome and Principe, Cape Verde and Angola, in partnership with several organizations, such as "Helpo" and "Ondjoyetu". As part of this project, activities related to health, such as training of the population, inoculation and public health in general will be carried out.
More recently, on 13 June last, our volunteer students participated in the Popular Saints festivities of Lisbon, with a typical tasquinha (small tavern) in São Martinho Square.
In order to have a better understanding of our activities we could mention other important activities, such as training events, the involvement in the “Solidarity Fair” or the “Thematic Semesters with MOVE-TE”.
However, we believe it will be more alluring to tell you about those projects in the forthcoming editions of this newsletter.
