ENJOY Med´10
ENJOY Med´10, the 2nd Edition of the National Meeting of Young Medical Students - is a student congress held at the Egas Moniz Building of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon (FMUL) over the weekend 11-12 December 2010.
The main objective is to foster open communication between students and lecturers and to involve future generations of doctors in current medical challenges.
ENJOY Med´10 was, once more, a very successful event, bringing together dozens of eminent guest and hundreds of FMUL students, as well as from other medical schools and health science degrees.
In this 2nd edition, the congress focused on three new modules aiming to explore famous and/or emerging specialties such as Psychiatry (Module I – “ConsSCIENCE”), Surgery (Module II – “Surgery XXI and Critical Care Medicine”) and Geriatrics (Module III – “New Medicine”), thus giving participants the opportunity to know each of these fields better.
Participants enjoyed a varied and enriching experience. They had the opportunity to attend workshops that enabled them to practice new competences, participate in debates with students and guest lecturers, which encouraged reflection and discussion about important themes, as well as be present at talks shedding light on the new chosen modules.
There was also room for students to present original scientific works they authored or co-authored, and the best works received awards:
- 1st Prize: Andreia Magalhães, “Study of absence of Notch signalling in endothelial and vascular smooth muscle differentiation from embryonic stem cells”,
- 2nd Prize: Mariana Correia, “Prognosis of transient neurological disturbances of undetermined diagnosis”,
- 3rd Prize: Sofia Ribeiro, “Effect of RANK-RANKL signalling pathway on MMP1, OPG and PTHrP gene expression of breast and prostate cancer cell lines in vitro”,
- Honourable Mentions: Mariana Alves, “Monitoring hypobaric hypoxia caused by air travel in young healthy subjects”
and Rúben Vale, “Effect of memantine on hippocampal long-term potentiation upon ageing”.
Why ENJOY Med? Learning medicine is like assembling a jigsaw puzzle – we are life-long learners accumulating experiences and information within a vast universe of knowledge, and, as we listen to a new mentor, read a new book and see a new patient, we place one more piece on our own jigsaw puzzle.
ENJOY Med offers students the conditions that enable them to add “pieces” to their individual jigsaw puzzles. The breath of the topics covered at the event aims to teach beyond medicine, so that we also know about medicine, taking into account the fact that the variety of activities encourages us to be not just competent technicians, but also doctors who master the arts and science, which are inherent to medical practice.
Attaining this goal is only possible thanks to the various eminent figures who kindly accepted our invitation to teach as part of the activities offered at ENJOY Med´10.
We also extend our thanks to FMEL and AEFML (Students’ Association of the Faculty of Medicine of Lisbon), to the secretariat of the Association for Research and Development of the Faculty of Medicine (AIDFM) and to the Office
for the Support of Scientific and Technological Research and Innovation (GAPIC) for lending their support to the organisation of the event.

We thank all participants for having accomplished what we prepared for you.
We hope that ENJOY Med´10 has added value to your training and that you will join us again next year.
ENJOY Med, ENJOY IT!
