Whereas Charles Estienne, a French doctor, writer and printer, from a prestigious family of humanists, cannot rival in fame with his contemporary Andreas Vesalius, the truth is, had he not been forced to stop publishing the work featured here, perhaps today they would be sharing the merit that tradition attributes just to Vesalius, that of dethroning Galen as a paradigm of the current anatomical thought, and of establishing the bases of modern anatomy.
As with De Humani Corporis Fabrica, Estienne's work is also profusely illustrated with drawings of the anatomy of the human body and dissections, while the background is usually composed of landscapes with a classical theme.
