
As in previous years, the CHULN Intensive Care Medicine Department will be promoting a new edition of the "Advanced Intensive Care Medicine Course" in November 2023. This is a theoretical-practical course aimed at interns with specific training in intensive care medicine, anesthesia or internal medicine and other physicians contacting with critically ill patients. With the scientific sponsorship of the Portuguese Medical Association and the Portuguese Society of Intensive Care.

Goals
At the end of the course, trainees are expected to be able to: a) recognize the most frequent critical pathology, namely shock; ARDS; acute kidney injury, multi-organ dysfunction syndrome; acute neurological dysfunction. b) apply an initial therapeutic strategy for the most relevant syndromes in intensive care medicine c) apply concepts of pathophysiology to personalize the treatment inherent in the most prevalent conditions in intensive care medicine; d) understand the functioning of life support used in the treatment of critically ill patients e) discuss the relevance of complications during ICU stays and post-ICU follow-up.
Methodology
It mixes theoretical lectures with a practical component based on clinical vignettes using simulators, namely simulating extracorporeal circulation circuits, renal replacement techniques, invasive mechanical ventilation or hemodynamic monitoring.
Costs
The course costs €240 (€220 for members of the Portuguese Society of Intensive Care). It includes participation in the course, bibliography and meals on those days at the Páteo Velho restaurant at the Ordem dos Médicos.
Evaluation
The course has a final assessment, which will be made available in an online format to complete after attending the course.
