The purpose of this seminar is to examine problems university students face, especially those at the University of Lisbon.
The premise of this seminar is that students come to universities from highly successful academic and social backgrounds and with a strong social support system, consisting of family and friends. But the university environment is a more challenging place and they have to face it largely on their own. They may find it difficult to deal with academic and personal problems, and while the university may provide professional assistance, students are more like to try to solve the problems on their own or by conferring with other students, often with negative results.
