Biographical note

João Taborda Barata is an Associate Professor at Lisbon School of Medicine, where he teaches Oncobiology and serves as the Director of the Disciplinary Area of Oncobiology, alongside Prof. Luís Costa. He is also the Coordinator of the Master's and Specialization Course in Oncobiology. He leads the Cancer Signaling Laboratory at Instituto de Medicina Molecular (iMM). He is the Vice-President of the Portuguese Association for Cancer Research (ASPIC) and a member of the Editorial Board of the journal Leukemia. João T. Barata has received, among others, four Pfizer Awards from the Lisbon Medical Sciences Society (2008, 2011, 2014, and 2021). His research work, funded by national and international agencies such as FCT, European Research Council, and Worldwide Cancer Research, and published in prestigious journals such as the Journal of Clinical Investigation, Journal of Experimental Medicine, Science Signaling, Nature Genetics, Nature Immunology, Nature Communications, Blood, Leukemia, Haematologica, and Cancer Research, explores the characterization of intracellular and microenvironmental mechanisms responsible for tumor genesis and progression. Although primarily focused on acute lymphoblastic leukemia, his laboratory's work over the years has also included studies on chronic lymphocytic leukemia, brain tumors, and, more recently, lung cancer.
