CEMBE: our contribution to value-based healthcare.
The Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine Studies (CEMBE) is at the forefront of Value Based Health Care with the new article on controlling hypertension in low- and middle-income countries.
Hypertension is the main modifiable risk factor for mortality. Responsible for 1 in 5 deaths worldwide, the exercise of controlling this pathology is nowadays a huge challenge, especially in countries where resources are scarce.
Acting in its capacity as partner, the CEMBE was part of the working group, created by the International Consortium for Health Outcomes Measurement (ICHOM), which, using the Delphi method * in 18 groups from 15 countries, identified a set of 12 standard results that aim, not to only to establish comparisons in the analysis of several clinical cases of hypertension, but also to reflect the most pressing needs of patients with this pathology worldwide.
On the eve of the annual ICHOM meeting held in Rotterdam on the 2nd and 3rd of May, the article entitled Improving Hypertension Outcome Measurement in Low- and Middle-Income Countries,, published in the journal Hypertension, emerged as the result of the research that was carried out, thus reinforcing the strong contribution that the CEMBE - as our School's Structural Unit - has had in the design, implementation and publication of this scientific article of great interest at the global level. According to Prof. António Vaz Carneiro, Director of the CEMBE and co-author of the article: "Portugal can and should continue to assert itself as a producer of advanced knowledge and not merely an applicator of methodologies developed by others. ”.
*Delphi Methodology - The Delphi methodology consists of surveying the opinions of experts, anonymously, by means of a questionnaire, and by rounds, enabling the analysis and exploration of the results of the information that is received, so that they can be resubmitted and modified, in order to allow reaching consensus and identifying priorities.
