University of Lisbon Social Action Services (SASUL)
The University of Lisbon Social Action Services (SASUL) is the entity that has a mission to carry out the social, cultural and sports activities defined in the applicable legislation for school social activities in higher education, according to what is set out in law and in the statutes of the University of Lisbon, aiming at providing its beneficiaries with the best conditions of study and training.
In order to carry out its mission, SASUL grants direct and indirect support, as well as coordinating several activities leading to the well-being of the academic community.
The direct supports are the awarding of study grants to students who have good academic results but have difficulties in guaranteeing financial conditions to continue studying.
Indirect support means all the other forms of support that may be applied to all the members of the academic community and which contribute to their well-being. Besides the health services or child support, the possibility of lodging in a university residence or meals in one of the canteens at discounted prices are the most sought-after forms of help.
To see the possibilities of support SASUL provides, we recommend you consult the page www.sas.ul.pt, where everything is explained.
Among all the supports perhaps the one that is least well-known is the University of Lisbon Sports Service, aimed at filling the free time of our university community in an active and healthy manner, and providing a full range of sports activities ranging from competition to recreation and leisure.
In Competition, we can highlight the teams that represent the University of Lisbon in the Lisbon University Championships, in the National and International competitions (EUSA and others). In 2008/09 we won forty national medals, with fifteen being gold.
Among the sports that regularly train and compete with other universities we should highlight Indoor Football, Table Tennis, Judo, Athletics, Swimming Badminton, Rock Climbing, Basketball and Handball.
Our Student-Athletes have access to several types of support. This ranges from psychological support, free access to the sports premises and a status granting benefits in the academic field. This year we also granted eight Sports Merit Study Grants.
In the field of Recreation & Leisure we can highlight the following:
The UL Academy (near to Canteen I), has a Fitness Room that is very well prepared for classes in Aerobics, Hip-Hop, Yoga, Oriental Dances, Brazilian Capoeira dance, etc. and an Exercise Room fitted with forty different machine stations to help aerobic/muscular capacity or to control weight. This, of course, with the respective teacher! Here there are also services such as massages, dietary advice and physiotherapy.
A large set of Open Air Activities allowing one to get to know our country in a different manner: Canoeing, Rambling, Surfing, Rollerblading and BTT riding are some of them. Several different beginners’ and improvement Courses for sports activities in fields such as Oriental Dances, Yoga, Massages, Ballroom Dancing, among others.
Several Internal Tournaments which, throughout each semester, allow one to make more friends and get to know other colleagues from other courses in our university.
