From the Degree in Microbiology to the Degree in Health Sciences
In 2004-2005 the University of Lisbon (UL), through the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Sciences, with the collaboration of the Faculty of Pharmacy, began a degree course in Microbiology which lasted four academic years. The aim of the course was to train a fully qualified microbiologist.
The educational aims were to grant each student multi-potential preparation in microbiology that would prepare him to freely and autonomously exercise the specialty, as well as to be qualified to participate in any post-graduate training in this area of knowledge, along with other like professional opportunities.
The training of the multi-potential microbiologist also included preparation in humanist values, valorization of scientific research, and preparation for a continued refreshing of knowledge and skills, as parts that could not be dissociated from the work and progress of microbiology.
In the academic year 2007-2008 it was decided to suspend the Degree in Microbiology and begin the Degree in Health Sciences, with a broader curriculum, thus guaranteeing basic training in the several different fields of knowledge that come together in the area of health.
Five faculties actively participate in this new UL degree course (Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Sciences, Faculty of Pharmacy, Faculty of dental Medicine and Faculty of Psychology and Education Sciences), with collaboration coming also from the Faculty of Letters and the Institute of Social Sciences.
This degree course will provide access to a great diversity of second cycle courses in the area of health, including the Faculty of Medicine second cycle in Clinical Microbiology, which resulted from the reorganization of the Degree in Microbiology and the Masters Course in Clinical Microbiology, which were lectured in our faculty until last academic year.
