Taking Office of the Association of Former Students of FMUL
size="10"
The Association of Former Students of the Faculty of Medicine of Lisbon (AAAFML) was formally presented at the inauguration ceremony held last July 9, in the Faculty Room. Professor António Gonçalves Ferreira also Director of the Institute of Anatomy and Clinical University of Neurosurgery of the Faculty of Medicine of Lisbon, takes over the Presidency of the Association, and Professor António Vaz Carneiro the role of President of the General Assembly.
This ceremony took place in the presence of the recently re-elected Director, Professor Fausto J. Pinto who made a point of addressing some words of encouragement: "This is an Association of which we are all members, because we have already been students of this Faculty. I see in this Association an immense potential for a set of activities that can enhance the image of our Faculty."
In a clear gesture of AAAFML's approach to the Faculty Direction and in a joint celebration, it made sense for News@fmul to realise that desires are now beginning with the new President, Prof. Gonçalves Ferreira.

Looking to the future, and as President, what are the plans for this Association and what contributions do you think it will make to enrich this Faculty?
Professor Gonçalves Ferreira: For one reason or another, our Association has been very lethargic; that is, it has produced little. It is very important that it grows and produces more, and this involves an activity that corresponds to the profile of this type of Associations, which is to support former students, reflect on topics of special relevance that congregate people of different ages and generations, graduates to seniors; then involves being active in participating in all that is a technical-scientific event and a major event related to the Faculty. In addition, we will find ways for members to benefit from some support with entities that are already available, such as Inatel, ACP, ACMP, Southern Medical Association, among others. All this in the perspective that AAAFML represents, at least potentially, a very large number of people that can be captivated for various types of activities.
One of the points where I will have a more proactive attitude will be in Presentation Week for Integrated Masters of Medicine to the new students, from September 17 to 21, for which I coordinate their organisation. On the last day of this week, we will have a closing conference that this year is entitled "The experience of being a doctor" to which AAAFML will invite someone with a lot of medical experience and who knows how to speak in a way that interests and mobilises the new students who are now joining the Faculty.
Another point I want to highlight is that this year the Association's leadership is much more diverse than in previous years, because we have brought together new people who bring a more lively perspective and motivation; it is very important to consider in the AAAFML the interests of the young colleagues in addition to the senior colleagues.

And will the Association become more effective?
Professor Gonçalves Ferreira: Yes, but of course we have the constraint of not having quotas, as is not usually the case in these Associations. There is a symbolic fee that is paid initially, but it is important to realise that it's not because they complete the Medicine study programme that they automatically become members. I do not think AAAFML has been sufficiently promoted or publicised and we need more partners to be more effective.
How do you plan to communicate better?
Professor Gonçalves Ferreira: We will communicate in a variety of ways, one of which is the week of access to the new students and as a way to get acquainted. Then when the Hippocratic oath is made at the end of the study programme at the Portuguese Medical Association, we intend to be there and once again to make ourselves known. Whether or not Nova Medical School can be there is also very important. Then, in keeping with previous years, we will hold conferences on topics of great interest. Another aspect is that, as we grow and have created a more extensive network of contacts, we inform colleagues about all the important subjects of the Faculty, namely, the PhD or other academic tests, the prizes awarded to people from the Faculty and other events that arouse the interest of the medical community.
In an attempt to be part of this new AAAFML communication project, the News@fmul team challenged President Gonçalves Ferreira to actively participate in relevant articles and news in the Newsletter and the proposal was accepted.
What remains is for us to congratulate this new team that takes office, and hope that the path among us is long and one of constant discovery.
