The seminar presented by Professor Nicole Le Douarin, PhD occurred on April 12th, at around 12 p.m., inside the Large Auditorium João Lobo Antunes at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon, organised by the Development Histology and Biology Institute of FMUL.
The theme of this seminar was “Head and Brain innovations: Development studies and Evolutionary insights” and resulted from the cooperation between the University of Lisbon and the Collège de France.
Nicole Douarin, PhD, is an indisputable authority in the scope of research related to Development Biology. Her study is dedicated to the important role of the neural crest in the embryogenesis of vertebrates, particularly in the development of the head and brain. For this study, she began with the hypothesis of “using” chimeras (the presence of two or more populations of genetically distinct cells. She developed her study using embryos of chickens and quails, having discovered that the organ responsible for the central tolerance mechanism within the immunity system is the thymus (the thymus is responsible for the development and selection of T lymphocytes).
