New application detects early signs of Parkinson's disease
A group of Portuguese researchers from the Faculty of Human Kinetics helped develop a mobile application that allows the early detection of Parkinson's disease.
The application for Android devices (mobile phones or tablets) was created as part of an international project that brought together 11 organizations from six countries: Portugal, Greece, Belgium, Germany, Sweden, and the United Kingdom.
Using this App from i-Prognosis is simple and accessible to any user. It is only necessary to write a message or just talk on the phone. What happens next is that these data are sent to a database with information about the signs that can evidence the disease. The rate at which a message is written, or pauses in speech, after comparison with a defined pattern, can act as an alert.
This way, the recording acts as a sample for the development of the research and enables detecting the early signs of the disease.
If signs or symptoms are detected, the person is contacted to see if he or she wants to be followed up by the medical team that integrates the project and that will make the diagnosis.
Parkinson's is a disease of the central nervous system and occurs when certain neurons die, causing tremors and difficulties in locomotion and balance. It manifests itself slowly and it can take years to be detected.
José Mourinho accepted the challenge of being the Ambassador of this campaign, encouraging the use of the application. Watch the video:
