On 18 September last, the 2017 Day of the Faculty Commemoration Ceremony was held at the Grand Auditorium of the Egas Moniz Building.

This event, which was packed, marked once again the first day of the welcome to first year students of "the largest and best medical school in the country".



The formal sitting was attended by Professor Fausto Pinto, Director of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon, Professor António Cruz Serra, Rector of the University of Lisbon, Professor Maria do Céu Machado, President of INFARMED and representing the Minister of Health, Professor Arlindo Oliveira, President of Instituto Superior Técnico, Professor José Ferro, President of the School Council, Professor José Melo Cristino, President of the Scientific Council, Isabel Pavão Martins, President of the Pedagogical Council, and student Teresa Valido, President of the FMUL Student’s Association.



After the musical performance of some members of the Lisbon Medical Choir and the Lisbon Medical Orchestra, the session began with a speech by Professor Fausto Pinto, who highlighted  the growth of the Faculty, namely through cooperation protocols established with several affiliated hospitals, and also through the expansion of the Faculty's physical space, referring to the inauguration of the Egas Moniz Building, which, years ago, hosted the Institutes of Preventive Medicine and Public Health, the Institute of Environmental Health, the Institute of Basic Sciences, and the Institute of Molecular Medicine.

 

This was followed by the participation of student Teresa Valido, who, with her personal testimony, encouraged new students to participate actively in the Faculty and in the AEFML.

The Rector of the University of Lisbon, Professor António Cruz Serra, stressed the importance of constant work in a degree as demanding as the medical degree and, on behalf of the University of Lisbon, also welcomed all first year students.



At this year's session, the guest speaker was Professor Arlindo Oliveira, President of Instituto Superior Técnico, who spoke about a relevant and current theme titled "New Technologies and the Medicine of the Future" (video).

 

The event also provided an opportunity to pay tribute to the Professors who have now retired, to the new full Professors, to the Associate and Assistant Professors and to the Professors with Aggregation, to the new Doctors, to the new lecturers and to the Technical-Administrative Staff with 25 years of Service, as well as to the doctors who graduated at this Faculty 50 years ago.



Merit Awards were conferred as well as two FMUL-CGD Excellence Awards as part of the protocol signed between the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon and Caixa Geral de Depósitos.



The closing ceremony was headed by Professor Isabel Pavão Martins and had the traditional Hippocratic Oath by year 1 medical students.



The Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon starts another academic year.
