The BIAL 2016/2017 Prize for Medicine awarded to the team led by Jaime Cunha Branco, Director of the Rheumatology Service of the Egas Moniz Hospital for the project "2EpiReumaPt - Epidemiological Study of Rheumatic Diseases in Portugal", was presented at a ceremony held on 21 April and presided by His Excellency the President of the Republic.
In this event, Bruno Silva-Santos, Professor at FMUL and Deputy Director of the IMM, was awarded an honourable mention for his work - Cancer immunotherapy: changing the paradigm.
Cancer immunotherapy is based on the activation of the immune system, namely T lymphocytes, a type of white blood cells with high anti-tumour activity. This allows manipulating the host (the lymphocytes) and not the tumour.
This work initiated by Bruno Silva-Santos 10 years ago has already resulted in several international patents and a biotechnology start-up, Lymphact S.A.
The next stage will be the development of clinical trials on various types of haematological cancers.
