GAPIC: Results of the 2016 Competitions
In order to promote and stimulate the practice of scientific research, in 2016 GAPIC launched three competitions, two of which for students of the Integrated Master Degree in Medicine (IMD) and another for medical newly graduates.
The David-Ferreira GAPIC Award, created in 2016, aims to distinguish the best Final Works/IMD Theses done by FMUL students. Thirteen applications were submitted and the following works were given awards:
- Award - Mariana Alves Vargas, ”Análise dos Falsos AVCs admitidos na Unidade de AVC do Hospital de Santa Maria entre 2007 e 2013“
-1st Mention of Honour - Jorge Miguel Aldinhas Ramos Ferreira, “Interim result analysis of the ongoing registry on Decompressive Surgery in Cerebrovenous Thrombosis – Part 2 (DECOMPRESS – 2) - Multicentric International Prospective Cohort Study”
- 2nd Mention of Honour (ex-aequo) - Maria de Azevedo António Machado da Silva, “Systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials to evaluate the placebo and nocebo responses in Restless Legs Syndrome”; Ana Cláudia Viseu Varandas, “From immune phenotype to clinical manifestations in CVID”.
For 20 years, GAPIC has annually opened the competition for the "Education through Science" Programme, which has allowed undergraduate students to participate in the design and execution of laboratory or clinical research projects as part of a research team of a unit of the FMUL or of the Institute of Molecular Medicine (IMM), supervised by a tutor. Twenty nine applications were submitted to the 20th Education though Science Programme|CHLN/FMUL grants (2016/2017), which, after evaluation by two independent researchers, were all accepted and granted with funding.
In 2016 GAPIC also opened a competition to the AstraZeneca Foundation/FMUL Research Fellowship to finance a health research project conducted by a recent medical graduate. Five applications were submitted to this competition, and the scholarship was awarded to Dr Pedro Nascimento Alves, with the project "Cognition and brain amyloid deposition in transthyretin-related familial amyloid polyneuropathy", to be conducted at the Laboratory of Language Studies.
