PROBLEM-BASED LEARNING and SELF-REGULATED LEARNING
Problem-Based Learning (PBL) in medical education focuses on the preparation of independent students with ability to perpetuate their learning and professional development autonomously beyond the classroom.
Self-Regulated Learning (SRL) skills are important to the success of PBL and the professional practice of the future physician. However, the development of these skills is often left to chance.
This study demonstrates how the development of SRL may be combined with PBL. The students who were actively involved and supported in SRL through concept maps and goal setting with planning, monitoring and reflection of the teaching in an interactive way have shown increased cognitive and metacognitive skills.
