Last Lesson of Professor Luís Mendes Graça - 19 September 2016

The Director of the FMUL, Professor Fausto J. Pinto opened the session, giving a warm welcome to all present and congratulating Professor Luís Graça Mendes on his Last Lesson. It is a tradition of the Faculty of Medicine with a particular meaning, as it is an occasion to reflect on a career, successes and difficulties, an educational, ethical and moral moment that must be celebrated.
He stressed the academic, medical, and research career of Professor Luís Graça, dedicated to Gynaecology, Obstetrics and Reproduction Medicine, highlighting his merit as one of the leaders in this area at national and international level, with a large number of publications and presentations.
This was followed by a speech by Dr Carlos Martins, Chairman of the Board of the North Lisbon Hospital Centre. He thanked the Professor for the 45 years dedicated to Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Reproductive Medicine at Santa Maria Hospital, always going further than just medical practice by lecturing and conducting research, thus contributing to the growth of this unit and this area.
The Last Lesson began with the usual greetings to those present, colleagues, friends, and family. In this academic act, the Professor spoke of his life, his professional path and those with whom he worked with. He was in Angola at the University of Luana and in 1972 had his first publication. During the medical internship he completed his doctoral thesis, published several articles and became Aggregate Professor. He did an internship at St George's Hospital in London in Foetal Medicine. He was also at St Johns Mercy Hospital, Saint Luis, USA. More recently, he has supervised research and a few doctoral theses. The work conducted at the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Service, of which he was the Director, allowed setting up some departments and units. He also carried out many non-assistential activities, cooperating directly with the Portuguese Medical Council. He is a member of the Board of the Federation of the Portuguese Societies of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, and in 2007 founded the Portuguese Society of Obstetrics and Maternal-Foetal Medicine, of which he is the President. He has received several national awards and published several books. At the end, he thanked his team, friends and family, and all those who contributed to his growth as a physician and as an academic.
Among those present were Dr Correia de Campos, Dr Maria de Belém Roseira, Dr Carlos Rosa and many others.
The session ended with the award of the Retirement Medallion by the Director of the Faculty.
