Obituary
Death of Professor João Lobo Antunes
The Institute of Molecular Medicine, the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon and the North Lisbon Hospital Centre, represented by the Medical Academic Centre of Lisbon and by their highest leaders, express their deepest condolences to the family of eminent Professor João Lobo Antunes.
Professor João Lobo Antunes was a major multidisciplinary, national and international figure who, with solid knowledge and high intellectual capacities, covered areas as diverse as neurosciences, particularly neurosurgery, and ethics, among others. A brilliant academician, he was an unusually cultured man who wrote beautifully and stood out as an eminent neurosurgeon and a master of generations to whom he left a legacy of excellence. He was a tireless and dedicated physician to his patients.
With so many and different challenges from public and social life befalling him, he was able to face them all with natural elegance, kindness and commitment, ensuring their success and generously making outstanding contributions to the country.
The professional life of Professor João Lobo Antunes is mirrored indelibly in our institutions, in which he left pages of excellence, like the Faculty of Medicine of Lisbon, as one of the greatest masters of this prestigious Medical School, Hospital de Santa Maria, as one of its most distinguished neurosurgeons with unrivalled international reputation or, more recently, the Institute of Molecular Medicine, a project of his responsibility that soon saw its capacity and international excellence recognized as one of the most respected and innovative medical research centres.
Today, we honour the exceptional man who marked his generation and these institutions, which have lost him but which will know how to keep his exceptional legacy alive.
