In this book a chapter is dedicated to the definition, evaluation and classification of obesity in general, pointing out he rules of anthropometry and also describing the several different types of obesity morphology.
In a second chapter there is a review of several significant international studies on the relationship between obesity and cardio-vascular risk and of diabetes. There is also a review of the studies on the prevalence of early obesity and adult obesity in the world.
Very important is the chapter that contains the most significant studies on obesity held in Portugal in different age groups: pre-school age, from 7 to 9, in adolescence and in adulthood, where an overview of the situation in Portugal is given. It should be stressed that in the adult age we are in the European average.
However, in the childhood-youth ages we are among the countries with most obesity, along with Spain, Italy and Greece.
The book also contains the publication of the work in relation to the difference between the subjective and objective BMI (Body Mass Index) evaluated in the study of prevalence, which relativises the results when they are self-reported.
Finally, the last chapter shows the results of the questionnaires in relation to diet and physical activity.
This is a book with 366 pages that is an indispensable work instrument for those who devote themselves to this area, and which the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon was correct to publish given the current importance of this pathology.
