Editorial Note
Waiting for Summer
A temperamental climate may lead to our wasting more time choosing what to wear, making the wrong choice, and, ultimately, descending into a bad mood. Hence, in order to write an editorial note covering the main objectives of this edition, and given the registered temperature range of the last few days, we have opted for the afternoon period, generally warmer and sunnier.
This 41st edition provides institutional information, namely the recent approval of the new FMUL Statutes, published in the Portuguese Official Gazette of 3 April 2014, and also the re-appointment of the Executive Director, Luís Pereira.
It also gives us great pleasure to report the results of our scientists' work and research. Therefore, in this edition, one of the main topics of discussion is the work of the IMM-FMUL [Institute of Molecular Medicine] researchers, which paves the way for new therapeutic approaches to Parkinson's disease.
GAPIC [Support Bureau for Scientific and Technological Research and Innovation] commemorates its 25th anniversary this year and, within the scope of a call for Innovative Projects in the Education Domain of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, the latter has approved GAPIC ‘s “Pre-graduate Science Experiences in Medicine” project.
Not to be missed, under the heading Report/Profile, is our “guided tour” to the FMUL CDI-Library, in an article featuring the extraordinary universe of a constantly evolving university library teeming with challenges. News took the opportunity to interview Professor António Vaz Carneiro, Chief Librarian of the FMUL.
News on our Undergraduate Open Day also features in this edition, reporting the dynamic initiative that attracts dozens of particularly curious and motivated secondary school pupils. The article on the FMUL'S participation in the 2014 edition of FUTURÁLIA is also highly recommended as a good read.
And why did the members of Faculdade de Ajudar [Faculty Help Group] go to the Agronomy Institute (ISA)? The answer, revealed in this article, mentions invasive plant species, a delicious type of honey, green landscape stretching as far as the eye can see, and new, friendly colleagues. Many other motives of interest have also made this place an attraction to be visited again in the near future.
Happy summer reading,
