More And Better
FMUL Launching of the Portuguese Branch of the Cochrane Collaboration
FMUL Launching of the Portuguese Branch of the Cochrane Collaboration
Date: June 24, 2014
Venue: Faculty of Medicine, University of Lisbon | Aula Magna
The Cochrane Collaboration is a highly organised network of health professionals, researchers, hospital managers, and patients (consisting of a group of over 28,000 people in 100 countries) who, on a non-profit basis, systematically organise evidence-based medical research information relevant to clinical practice, particularly in the field of therapeutics.
The Cochrane Collaboration main objectives are ”(…) to help healthcare providers, policy-makers, patients, their advocates and carers, make well-informed decisions about healthcare, by preparing, updating, and promoting the accessibility of Cochrane Systematic Reviews – over 5,000 so far - published online in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, part of The Cochrane Library.”
The Cochrane Collaboration is a non-governmental organisation that advocates evidence-based healthcare viewed as unique for its prestige and impact on the various most modern health systems worldwide.
The recently created PORTUGUESE BRANCH OF THE IBEROAMERICAN COCHRANE CENTER (PBIaCC) is made up of the following three entities:
1. The PORTUGUESE COLLABORATING CENTER OF THE IBEROAMERICAN COCHRANE NETWORK, based at the Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine Research (CEMBE) [Centro de Estudos de Medicina Baseada na Evidência] headed by Professor Vaz Carneiro.
2. The MOVEMENT DISORDERS REVIEW GROUP, based at the Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics Laboratory of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Lisbon [Laboratório de Farmacologia Clínica e Terapêutica] headed by Professor J. Costa;
3. The PORTO UNIT OF THE PORTUGUESE BRANCH OF THE IBEROAMERICAN COCHRANE CENTRE, based at CINTESIS – Centre for Health Technology and Information System, Faculty of Medicine, University of Oporto (FMUP) headed by Professor Costa Pereira.
The PBIaCC main objectives are: to liaise with the Cochrane Collaboration; to publish systematic reviews of biomedical literature; to provide scientific support to Portuguese researchers wishing to publish systematic reviews; and to offer pre- and postgraduate training in this secondary research area.
Additionally, the PBIaCC is likely to play a vital role worldwide particularly with regard to the setting up of partnerships with Portuguese-speaking countries (Brazil, Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde, etc.) and to the creation of a network of Portuguese-speaking researchers, thus increasingly lending more visibility their work within the Cochrane Collaboration.
The launching ceremonies of the Portuguese Branch will be held at the FMUP on June 23 and at the FMUL on June 24, respectively. The presence of the Cochrane Collaboration CEO Mark Wilson and Iberoamerican Cochrane Network Director Xavier Bonfill in these two launching ceremonies attests to the high regard the Cochrane Collaboration has for the PBIaCC.
Setting up a Portuguese Branch of this prestigious organisation is of great significance to the development of clinical research in Portugal as it is likely to make highly relevant information available to clinical and management decision-makers, health policy-makers and patients who may thus make more informed choices.
