"lt is to recent achievements, to íts fítness to cope with present problems, and its foresight in preparing for the future, that the Universíty commands the attention of the student in search for training, the teacher in search of methods and the expert in search of accurate knowledge..." FMUL's Bulletin nº 27, October 1987
It is this motto, published in the “The Harvard Century, 1986, New York”, by Richard Norton Smith, that has been guiding us since 1987, when the Audiovisual Unit was set up by a group of enthusiasts of new technologies associated with medicine by profession: Professor Miguel Carneiro de Moura (Medical Education and the New Audiovisual Technologies), Dr Maria Clara Nunes (Audiovisual Technologies and Interactive systems – Pedagogical Reflections), Professor Mário Andrea (Video in Medical Education), Professor Frederico Silveira Machado (Pedagogical Technologies – Their Value in Medical Education), and Professor Mário G. Lopes (Computers in Medical Education).
Currently, the Audiovisual Unit is part of the Computer and Communications Centre which, in turn, is part of the Department of Administrative Management of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon. It is composed by technicians João Godinho, Paulo Caeiro, Rui Vila and Hugo Silva.
Backed by a proactive team, it provides strong face-to-face and instant support to all pedagogical areas of the Faculty, so that no class fails to take place due to any technical problem. This support is twofold: audiovisual assistance during classes and audiovisual support in the preparation of educational materials for teaching.
During the semesters, all theoretical and theoretical-practical classes resorting to audiovisual resources become a priority in our tasks.
With regard to the preparation of educational materials, we collaborate directly with lecturers in preparing presentations or educational videos.
The audiovisual team is part of an area characterized by constant request of a series of audiovisual services.
In the last years, videoconferencing has become one of the most important areas of the Audiovisual Unit of FMUL.
Since 14 October 2004, date of the inauguration of the videoconferencing sessions with the University of Madeira, they have acted as a means of distance learning. These ten years of videoconferencing between FMUL and the UMA have showed very positive training results and have been a vital tool to promote interaction between students and lecturers, rescinding some constraints, such as the possibility to physically expand face-to-face courses, geographical limitations and difficulties in increasing the number of lecturers.
One of the strong points of our services is undoubtedly the production of “Educast” virtual classes. This video management system, through which classes, talks and lectures can be recorded and made available to students in Flash, QuickTime and iPod format, has been growing exponentially, albeit being still quite unknown.
The production of promotional videos is another aspect worth highlighting, as it has been expanding in recent times, contributing to the dissemination of services provided by our Faculty.
We are all aware that visual content helps us convey or channel messages or available services more easily. With this in mind, we have been producing some promotional videos to improve the visibility of all Academic Services, thus enabling us to capture the attention of people within the Faculty and provide them the information they seek rapidly, in a fun and interesting way, and share it on social networks.
Another service offered by the Audiovisual Unit is support to extra-curricular activities, such as conferences, seminars, and scientific meetings, among others. In this type of event, support ranges from preparation, meeting the organization’s special requirements, to the actual event, by means of computing and audiovisual assistance.
The Audiovisual Unit also assists in conference coverage in terms of photography and video, in the design of corporate image, live and online broadcasting, and/or support to external companies.
You can find us on floor 6 of the Santa Maria Hospital building (opposite the Faculty’s Central Library) and on the Egas Moniz Building, on level 0 (next to the Facilities and Equipment Centre).
