IMM-FMUL research: Lack of Vitamin A in pregnancy restricts children’s resistance to infections
Results published in Nature show that vitamin A deficiency in the diet of mothers during pregnancy reduces their children’s resistance to infections.
A team of researchers of the Institute of Molecular Medicine of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon (IMM-FMUL), coordinated by Henrique Veiga Fernandes, discovered an important link between the diet of pregnant women and foetal development. Research conducted in animal models has shown that maternal diet has an irreversible impact on the development of the immune systems of the foetus, affecting his ability to control infections after birth.
