Student Statistics – RAIDES
The Statistical Survey of the Register of Students Enrolled and Qualified in Higher Education (RAIDES) is an annual survey aimed at all higher education institutions about the students matriculated, enrolled and qualified requested by the Office of Planning, Strategy, Assessment and International Relations (GPEARI) of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education.
This survey refers to the 31st of December 2008 and has as its unit of register the individual: “enrolled student” and “qualified student”.
For the correct completing of the RAIDES Survey, Digitalis (a software and services company) has developed an application for the treatment and translation of the SiGes data to the RAIDES, and has also made available new fields for the collecting of data by the student or worker demanded by the GPEARI and which until now did not exist on the SiGES student file. This involved the creation of a form to be filled out as prerequisite, on the SIA net, for the case of the students matriculated in the first year, for the first time, for future transfer of data (SiGES > RAIDES). The bringing about of this exporting implied a joint work involving several different areas, namely the Academic Section, the Information Technologies Unit, Digitalis and the GPEARI. In order for this exporting to be a success, parameterizations, associations, configurations of rules for mapping out existing codes and descriptions for the RAIDES module were carried out.
It should be pointed out that the filling out of the data by the Advanced Training Institute (IFA) was carried out manually, as until now the IFA has not worked with the SiGES.
The RAIDES allows rapid and clear access to statistical data about students matriculated/enrolled and qualified from the Higher Education Institutions. Using graphs, we here explain some of these data we consider to be most relevant and interesting in relation to Under- and Post- Graduate Training in the several different study cycles before Bologna (Masters and PhD) and adapted to Bologna (2nd and 3rd Cycle):
1. The total of students enrolled by teaching cycle, as well as their distribution by sex. (M/W – Men and Women; H – Men)
![Fig. 1 - Distribution by sex of all students enrolled by degree of teaching](http://news.medicina.ulisboa.pt/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/RaidesFig1ENG.gif)
Figure 1 – Distribution by sex of all students enrolled by degree of teaching
2. Total enrolled in 1st year, 1st time (matriculated), by degree of teaching
![Fig.2 – Total matriculated by degree of teaching](http://news.medicina.ulisboa.pt/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/RaidesFig2ENG.gif)
Figure 2 – Total matriculated by degree of teaching
Figure 2 shows a greater number of enrolled students in the Integrated Masters in Medicine (MIM) as this is the new course, adapted to Bologna, replacing the Degree in Medicine that will be extinguished during the academic year 2009-2010. Like the previous academic year, no places were offered for the courses in Microbiology and Dietetics and Nutrition. In relation to postgraduate studies, one notices a greater number of students matriculated in the 2nd cycle (studies adapted to Bologna), with about 100 students.
3. Total enrolled in the 1st year, 1st time (matriculated), by sex and age

Figure 3 – Total matriculated by sex and age group
Besides the information obtained from Figure 3, we can add, as a curiosity, that 63% of the students entered the MIM at the age of 18 and 4% at 17. Both in the Masters and the PhDs there is a greater percentage of matriculated students in the age group between 23 and 29 years old.
4. Total qualified by degree of teaching

5. 5. Total qualified by sex and age

Figure 5 – Total qualified by sex and age group
As a complement to the information presented in the above figure, it should be noted that 55% of students qualified before the age of 24, with 48% of Masters and 36% of PhDs obtaining qualifications with ages between 30 and 39.
