Cooperation Projects with Lusophone Africa
In 2013, the following projects were implemented as part of the cooperation with Portuguese Speaking African Countries (PALOP) under the Platform to Support the Funding and Development of this Project, involving the Faculty of Medicine of Lisbon (FML)/Association for Research and Development of the Faculty of Medicine (AIDFM) and Santa Maria Hospital (HSM), on the one hand, and the Industry, on the other:
- Master Degree in Public Health of the Faculty of Medicine of Eduardo Mondlane University, Maputo, Mozambique – Epidemiology and Clinic of Infectious Diseases Module (30 hours) – 11 to 22.02.2013 – with the participation of FML lecturers – Professor Francisco Antunes and Dr Nuno Janeiro;
- Dr Awa Carimo is carrying out, in Mozambique, the Thesis of the Master Degree in Emerging Infectious Diseases, entitled “Prevalence of occult hepatitis B in patients infected with human immunodeficiency type 1/2 virus in the area of Mavalane, Maputo City, Mozambique”;
- Dr Lúcia Chambal is carrying out, in Mozambique, the Thesis of Master Degree in Emerging Infectious Diseases, entitled “Study of the genetic diversity and primary resistance to lamivudine of hepatitis B in patients co-infected with human immunodeficiency virus in Maputo, Mozambique”;
- Dr Pereira Mandambo Zindoga – a Mozambican doctor, finished his work on the Master Degree in Emerging Infectious Diseases, entitled “Resistance to nevirapine in children of Maputo, after a prophylactic regimen of mother to child transmission of HIV in Mozambique”;
- Sixth Updating Course on Tuberculosis and AIDS, 25-26.11.2013, held during the Week to Celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Faculty of Medicine of Eduardo Mondlane University, Maputo – Mozambique (figures 1 and 2);
- Dr Irene Alda Langa (Holder of a PhD Grant from Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation) – Mozambique, as part of her PhD Thesis entitled “Lymphatic Filariasis in Mozambique – Analysis of its distribution at country, district and community level”, concluded the fieldwork in Mozambique after completing the taught component of her PhD in Portugal;
- Clinical Internships in Tropical Medicine – 13 students of the Faculty of Medicine of Lisbon carried out supervised clinical internships for 4 weeks in September 2013 at the Dr. Agostinho Neto Hospital (Cape Verde), Dr. Ayres de Menezes Hospital (São Tomé and Príncipe) and Central de Maputo Hospital (Mozambique) – the reports will follow shortly (figures 3 - 10).
On the occasion of the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the Faculty of Medicine of Eduardo Mondlane University, Maputo, Mozambique, the Rector gave Professor Francisco Antunes the Diploma of Merit in International Partnership in recognition for his outstanding and long cooperation with that Faculty. The Diploma of Merit in International Partnership was also awarded to the Association for Research and Development (AIDFM) of the Faculty of Medicine of Lisbon (figures 11 and 12).
In 2014, the following events have been planned as part of the collaboration between the Faculty of Medicine of Lisbon and PALOP countries:
- Seventh Updating Course on Tuberculosis and AIDS, Maputo – Mozambique;
- Supervised clinical internships for 12 students of the Faculty of Medicine of Lisbon in Cape Verde, São Tomé and Príncipe, and Mozambique;
- Viva Voce of the Thesis of the Master Degree in Emerging Infectious Diseases of Dr Pereira Zindoga, at the Faculty of Medicine of Lisbon;
- Study of the samples taken for the work on the Master Thesis in Emerging Infectious Diseases of Dr Awa Carimo and preparation of the manuscript to be submitted to the Scientific Council;
- Study of the samples taken for the work on the Master Thesis in Emerging Infectious Diseases of Dr Lúcia Chambal and preparation of the manuscript to be submitted to the Scientific Council;
- Updating Guide on HIV/AIDS infection and Hepatitides Therapy – co-authored by specialists from Mozambique and designed, in part, to be used in education and training courses taking place in Lusophone Africa.
