About World No Tobacco Day
Smoking is an extremely comprehensive issue affecting the entire world and has serious repercussions for all ages. It contributes directly to 6 of 8 leading causes of death worldwide, namely heart disease, stroke, respiratory infections, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and various types of cancer. Smoking is the main cause of preventable illnesses and leads to premature death in developed countries.
There are about one billion smokers worldwide and each year 6 million people die due to tobacco use. Ten per cent of those victims did not choose to smoke and die as a result of exposure to tobacco smoke of other people. Overall, one person dies every six seconds due to smoking.
According to the Eurobarometer, in Portugal about 23% of the population smokes. A third of smokers allow smoking throughout the house, and almost 15% admit to smoking in the car in the presence of children.
Children are particularly vulnerable to environmental exposure to tobacco smoke due to the immaturity of their respiratory and immune systems, in addition to inhaling a proportionally greater volume of air than adults. The consequences for their health are reflected at various levels, particularly in respiratory and middle ear problems and the risk of sudden death in infants.
The overwhelming majority of smokers started smoking before the age of eighteen, for which reason the interventions in this age group are most likely to be more successful. This is why prevention efforts need to be directed primarily at youngsters, starting as early as possible. The tobacco industry is well aware of this and it is not by chance that it chooses youth as its prime target for its direct and indirect market policies. This was one of the reasons why the World Health Organization (WHO), which is openly committed to the fight against global tobacco epidemic, this year chose for motto “Banning the sponsorship, promotion and advertising of tobacco”, either in its direct or indirect form.
The WHO has been promoting “World No Tobacco Day” annually on 31 May since 1987 with the aim of warning and protecting current and future generations from the tobacco epidemic.
