Debate about the new statutes of the University of Lisbon held at IST
On 7th March, the Main Hall of Instituto Superior Técnico – IST (Higher Technical Institute) hosted the discussion on the project for the statutes of the new University of Lisbon resulting from the merger between the Technical University of Lisbon and the Classical University (UL).
The event, which was attended by the rectors of both universities, Professor António Cruz Serra and Professor António Sampaio da Nóvoa, as well as by the president of IST, was a means to disclose "what happened behind the closed doors of the Statutory Assembly”, in the words of Professor Arlindo de Oliveira.
According to the rector of the UL, Professor António Sampaio da Nóvoa, the resulting document "is the outcome of a compromise", and was prepared amidst an atmosphere that "could hardly have been more healthy, participated and positive".
In turn, Professor António Cruz Serra spoke of the need to extend the debate to the entire community affected by the merger of the two universities: “the objective of this meeting is indeed to listen to you, answer questions and resolve issues”, he affirmed.
During the debate, which lasted about two hours, various questions were posed, such as the relationship of the new University with Santa Maria Hospital, increasing participation of non-teaching staff in the life of the Schools – namely the inclusion of representatives in the General Council – and the differences between the new statutes and former ones.
