50th Anniversary of Student Day - The Academic Crisis of 1962
24 de Março, Aula Magna da Reitoria da Universidade de Lisboa
In the Rectory of the University of Lisbon’ Aula Magna took place, on the 24th March, what was, on all accounts, a remarkable session.
It was a moment that signaled the importance and historical significance of the Academic Crisis of 1962, when hundreds of college students shook the Fascist Regime of Salazar, which, in response, would carry out numerous arrests and prohibit the students associations.
There was music, theater and dance of fine quality and memorable speeches (Jorge Silva Melo).
Students of the Faculties of Science, Law, Medicine and Letters, participated, lived and felt the testimony of the Generation of 62, whose members marked their moving presence at the Aula Magna.
The Choir of the University and also the Children's Choir, the Estudantina Universitária de Lisboa, the Law School Vocal and Coimbra Guitar Group, the Theatre of Letters Group, the Theatre Group of the Technical University of Lisbon and João Afonso all participated. And there was the moving speech by Jorge Silva Melo, which evoked, out of gratitude, all the merit of the Generation of 62, their efforts, sacrifices, and how much we are in their debt.
It was indeed a remarkable cultural moment, one out of many prepared by the University of Lisbon’s staff to commemorate the Academic Crisis of 1962, which also included guided tours guided tours of the Exhibition in the Rectory’s Hall.
We have no doubt about the interest of similar initiatives that will take place, and if you have not visited the Exhibition, we strongly recommend you to do so.
