University Clinic of Infectious Diseases - Presentation
The University Clinic of Infectious Diseases of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon works together with the Infectious Diseases Department of the Northern Lisbon Hospital Centre. This academic unit is led by Professor Francisco Antunes.
In undergraduate education, the practical component of the subject Infectious Diseases and Tropical Medicine takes place at the Inpatient, Intensive Care and Ambulatory Units. In postgraduate education, students of the Master Degree in Emerging Infectious Diseases benefit from the cooperation protocols established between FMUL and Agostinho Neto (Cape Verde), Américo Boavida (Angola) and São Tomé Central (São Tomé and Principe) hospitals. These agreements make it easier for health technicians and medical education staff from the institutions involved to undertake training projects and research.
Clinical internships have been created for students and recent graduates of the Faculty of Medicine of Lisbon/Northern Lisbon Hospital Centre. The Infectious Diseases Department has hosted students from the European Community, through the Erasmus programme, for training in Infectious Diseases.
In terms of clinical research, the performance of the University Clinic of Infectious Diseases with regard to clinical trials of new treatments for HIV-AIDS has amply justified its reputation as a national reference centre.
The Professor informed us about the Clinic and corresponding teaching, research and care activities.
