Celebrations of the Centenary of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon (1911/2011)
The Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon celebrated its Centenary on 6 and 7 May.
The theme on the 6th was “Science and Education – 100 years of the Faculty of Medicine”. Several guest speakers addressed the topic of research in the field of medical sciences.
The 7th was the day chosen to celebrate Faculty Day. The usual tributes were paid to lecturers and non-teaching staff, and, to commemorate the centenary year, to formers members of the governing body of FMUL as well.
In his open address the Director of this School, Professor J. Fernandes e Fernandes, highlighted the foundation of the Faculty and its historic landmarks over the past 100 years, and stressed that the next step would be to “consolidate the Academic Medical Centre and make it a reference institution in the European context we are part of (...)”. He also emphasized that “Medical Education and its expansion and modernization has been a priority of the Faculty”.
Professor Márcio Castro Silva, representing the Director of the Faculty of Medicine of Belo Horizonte, announced the Egas Moniz Programme, which is a Protocol of Intent agreed between the Faculty of Medicine of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais and the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon. It involves cooperation in terms of mobility of medical students, doctors and researchers in the geographical area of Culture and Language with a Portuguese origin, and which “will be a foundation for the future” (quote from the speech made by Professor. J. Fernandes e Fernandes).
Two additional protocols were signed on this day: The Collaboration Protocol between the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon (FMUL) and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation (FCG) for the creation of the Calouste Gulbenkian Chair, and the Association Protocol between the Lisbon Academic Medical Centre (CAML) and the Management Company of Loures Hospital, S.A. (SGHL).
The first was presented by Dr. Emílio Rui Vilar, Chairman of the FCG. Its activities will focus on topics related to “Global Health Politics” and the Humanization of Medicine. It aims to promote areas of interdisciplinary and global interest and strengthen the link with Social Sciences and Culture, with the goal of conferring a prominent academic approach to ongoing projects carried out by CAML.
The second was presented by Engineer Isabel Vaz, representing the Board of SGHL. This association protocol aims to foster the collaboration between the two entities in the development of postgraduate medical education, in direct association with the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon, and to encourage joint initiatives in the area of postgraduate training and differentiated care, in collaboration with Health Care Services and clinical research programmes, so as to enable its expansion, diversification and cooperation with the founding institutions of CAML. It also aims to promote undergraduate and postgraduate studies and clinical and biomedical research to develop the qualifications of clinical services and foster the technical and scientific training of the professional staff of SGHL.
The ceremony was attended by many distinguished guests and next year there will surely be new stages and situations in the history of our Medical School.
