The opening of the 2008 / 2009 academic year of the Masters Courses at the FMUL was marked by the diversity of opening lessons during which we had the honour and privilege to receive illustrious academic personalities:

MASTERS AND PhD COURSES IN NEUROCIENCES
The Opening Lesson of the Masters and PhD Courses in Neurosciences was held on the 16th of October in the Almeida Lima Amphitheatre, delivered by Professor Fernando Lopes da Silva, on the subject: “New Views on Epileptogenesis: Interactions between Molecular Genetics, System Neurophysiology and Clinical Activity” .

MASTERS IN BIOETHICS (7th Edition)
The 7th edition of the Masters Course in Bioethics began on the 30th of October, in the welcoming meeting rooms in the Bioethics Centre. The Opening was headed by the Masters Course Council and, as has become usual in the first Curricular Unit, this year also we had the wisdom of Professor Fernando Cascais, from the New University of Lisbon, who spoke to us about “Conditions of Emergency and Socio-genesis of Bioethics”.

MASTERS IN FORENSIC MEDICINE AND FORENSIC SCIENCES (4th Edition)
On the 10th of October 2008 the 4th edition of the Masters Course in Forensic Medicine and Forensic Sciences began in the Institute of Forensic Medicine – Lisbon Delegation.
Professor Jorge Costa Santos began the opening session of the course, followed by a short introduction to Forensic Medicine and Forensic Sciences.
Judge Counsellor Dr. Armando Leandro – President of the National Commission for Child Protection and Children at Risk, gave a talk dedicated to the subject: “Medical-Legal Expertise – Juridical Relevance.”

MASTERS COURSE IN SLEEP SCIENCES (4th Edition)
On the 17th of October 2008, the Inaugural Session of the 4th edition of the Masters Course in Sleep Sciences took place in the Aula Magna of the FMUL.
Teachers from the Masters Course Council were present – Professora Teresa Paiva, Professor Fernando Lopes da Silva, Professor Óscar Dias and Professor Mário Andrea.
Professor Teresa Paiva (course coordinator) welcomed the students, introduced the course and gave a brief description of how the classes will take place in the system of e-learning.
There followed a presentation by Professor Fernando Lopes da Silva on the subject: “Functions of Sleep”.

MASTERS COURSE IN PALLIATIVE CARE (6th Edition)
On the 23rd of October 2008 the Inaugural Session of the 6th edition of the Masters Course in Palliative Care took place in the Cid dos Santos Amphitheatre.
Teachers from the Masters Course Council were present – Professor António Barbosa, Professor Luís Costa and Isabel Galriça Neto.
Professor António Barbosa gave a brief introduction to the course, followed by an assessment of students’ needs and expectations for the Sixth Masters Course in Palliative Care.
The first intervention was given by Professor António Barbosa with the subject: “Intervening in Suffering”, and Professor Luís Costa spoke about “The Family in Palliative Care”.

MASTERS/PhD COURSE IN EPIDEMIOLOGY
The Masters/PhD Course in Epidemiology began on the 7th of November 2008, with its inaugural session having taken place in the Aula Magna of the FMUL.
The guest orator was Professor Jose M. Martin-Moren (Professor in-Cathedra in Preventive Medicine and Public Health at the Faculty of Medicine and Odontology, University of Valencia) who delivered a lesson dedicated to the subject: “Applications of the Epidemiological Method in Public Health and in the Administration of the Health System”
