Hospital for Small Children
This edition involves the collaborative work of Nursing, Medicine, Dental Medicine, Pharmaceutical Sciences, and Nutrition students who, through their corresponding Students’ Associations, make it possible for about 2000 children to attend the event.
The objective of this project, which celebrates its 9th edition this year, is, through role-playing, to reduce the anxiety children experience in the presence of a health professional. In parallel, children have the opportunity to learn about basic health notions. Medical students also gain a lot from participating in this project, as they contribute towards the learning of these children and simultaneously develop their empathy towards children of this age group.
The Hospital for Small Children follows a route that includes: Waiting Room, Screening Room, Examination Room, Testing, Radiology, Surgery, and Treatment Room. This is followed by visits to the Chemist, a Dental Medicine Appointment, and a Nutrition Appointment. After going through this route, each child receives an attendance certificate, a bag with a small meal, in addition to a set of gifts and food supplies that are offered to schools for subsequent distribution among the children.
This special Hospital, which operates non-strop between 9h and 17h, receives over 50 children per hour thanks to the team work of about 350 collaborators enrolled in this activity. The events lasts a whole week.
It must equally be stressed that schools from all over the country, particularly from the Algarve and Alentejo, participate in the Hospital for Small Children. Given the complexity of organising this event, this is only possible thanks to the tireless work of an Organising Committee that starts prepraring it over two months in advance.
Besides, it would be impossible to organize a project of this scale without the collaboration of the several entities that are kindly involved t, namely the Faculty of Medicine of Lisbon, the Northern Lisbon Hospital Centre (Santa Maria Hospital) and the Social Welfare Services of the University of Lisbon. The Organising Committee expresses its thanks to all these entities.
We also have the support of many types of media.
This project is also a major asset for AEFML and for all the students’ associations involved, as well and for all the participating students, due to its pedagogical and supportive nature.
This year, our aim is to attain the level of success the event enjoyed last year, or do even better, and to be able to reach a higher number of children who have a lot to gain from spending a few hours at this Hospital for Small Children.
