Ceremony of Homage to Professor Arsénio Cordeiro in the Faculty of Medicine of Lisbon
A session paying homage to Professor Arsénio Cordeiro was held on the 21st of June last in the Aula Magna of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon.
Professor Carlos Ribeiro, coordinator of the organizing committee of the homage paid by a group of former collaborators, disciples and admirers, stated that this session aimed at paying homage to “the person who had a crucial importance in the preparation of several generations of doctors”.
Professor Fernandes e Fernandes, Dean of the FMUL, within the scope of the commemorations of the Centenary of the Faculty, invited several different academic and social figures to this ceremony. The aim was to “polish and shine the work of Arsénio Cordeiro, so that time would not let it grow dull, recalling it for older generations of doctors and presenting it to more recent generations, who are usually very absent in relation to their roots” (Carlos Ribeiro in Tempo de Medicina).
The session was preceded by a religious ceremony in the Santa Maria Hospital Chapel, and an exhibition was inaugurated that led the invited guests through the real world inhabited by Professor Arsénio Cordeiro, in which one could see emblematic objects, those of personal use and medical equipment made available by his family and friends. There was also the unveiling of an acrylic painting which his friends presented to the Faculty of Medicine and which will be placed in the UTIC-Arsénio Cordeiro (Intensive Treatment Unit for Coronary Patients) which he created.
There was also the distribution of two publications evoking the man and the work of Professor Arsénio Cordeiro. One of these was the FMUL Magazine nº. 2/2010, with about 200 pages and over 40 photographs, in which several articles by authors invited to comment on the works of the professor were published. The other publication was a book by Professor Luciano Ravara and by Dr Maria João Leitão.
The session was attended by the Chancellor of the University of Lisbon, Professor António Nóvoa, the President of the Assembly of the Faculty, Professor Lobo Antunes, and the President of the Board of the North Lisbon Hospital Centre – EPE, Professor Correia da Cunha, and also by Professor Ernâni Lopes, representing Professor Arsénio Cordeiro’s family.
