More And Better
Terry Fox Grants
The Terry Fox grants were born out of the courage and the dream of a young Canadian.
Terry Fox was a young man aged 18 who was diagnosed with bone cancer and who, after hospitalisation and daily contact with the suffering of other young people who also had cancer, decided to walk across Canada in order to raise funds for the research, treatment and cure for this illness. This “run” of his, which took place in 1980, became known as the “Hope Marathon”. Terry ended up dying in June 1981, but since then Terry Fox races are held all over the world in his memory. The first Terry Fox Race in Portugal was held in 1994, and since then it has become a tradition that this year will be repeated in its 15th edition on the 8th of May in the Parque das Nações in Lisbon.
As always, the funds raised are for the Portuguese League against Cancer (NRS) to finance research grants in oncology for works carried out in Portugal. Up to now 479,493.10 Euros have been raised, which have financed 41 research grants.
On the 10th of March last the award ceremony was held in the premises of the Portuguese League against Cancer (NRS) for the Terry Fox Grants (resulting from the funds raised during the 2009 race). The recipients were the following researchers with their respective projects:
Dr. João Taborda Barata
