Researching Science and Health
The Internet has definitively established itself in our lives, and Internet search engines now carry out the function previously reserved for telephone books and dictionaries. Orientation and research are essential in order to make the most of the Internet. Through this item in the “Open Space”, news@fmul intends to contribute towards this orientation.
In each issue we will divulge some Internet pages or blogs that seem worthy of note to us from the academic or scientific viewpoint so that they can figure on each person’s list of favourites. We invite all our readers to send suggestions to news@fm.ul.pt

“Your Genes, Your Choices”, describes the Human Genome Project (PGH), the science that is behind it, as well as the ethical, legal and social challenges it places. The PGH is the result of an international effort to draw up the map of the human genome, and the identification of all the nucleotides that make it up. After an initiative by the United States National Institutes of Health, hundreds of laboratories from all over the world came together in the task of one by one sequencing the genes that codify the proteins in the human body and also those DNA sequences that are not genes. On the 14th of April 2003 the project was successfully completed, with the sequencing of 99% of the human genome, to a precision of 99.99%. More information on:
