More And Better
B-on Training, EndNote Web and RCAAP - “Information a Click Away”
B-on TRAINING
The B-on “Online Knowledge Library” has revolutionised access to information in Higher Education Institutions in Portugal since 2004, when it was created.
In this context the B-on portal has progressively added resources, guaranteeing access to about 22,000 online newspapers from all scientific areas, continuing to improve the functions of research and increasing its activities of divulging information.
On the 1st and 2nd of March there were training actions in the FMUL – Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon aimed at Library technicians, Archivists and Documentalistsm researchers and users in general, during which the subjects were access to the B-on portal resources, the EndNote Web bibliographical reference manager and also the RCAAP – Scientific Repository of Open Access in Portugal.
What is B-on?
B-on is a virtual library which brings together the main international academic and scientific publishing houses in order to make available a vast set of online articles, with full text, in the several different areas of knowledge. The portal also contains the mains free resources to open access periodicals.

Who promotes this project?
It is a joint project set up by the UMIC (Agency for the Web of Knowledge), MCTES (Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education), with the FCCN (Foundation for National Scientific Computation) being the entity responsible for operational management, both technical and financial.
Financing for the project is included in the POS_C (Web of Knowledge Operational Programme) and involves a funding of about 12 million Euros.
Aims of the B-on Project
• To promote electronic access to most of the major international sources of knowledge;
• To increase the visibility, accessibility and diffusing of the results of Portuguese academic activity and scientific research, making it possible for it to be used and have an impact on the Portuguese and international scientific community;
• To facilitate information management about Portuguese scientific production;
• To generate scale economies, referring to the costs of subscriptions to Portuguese periodicals;
• To develop fundamental skills in information and knowledge management;
• To play an active and participating role in the construction of the Web of Knowledge.
Institution that can join B-on
• Higher education institutions
• R & D institutions
• Public service organisms
• Private, non-profit-making institutions
• Hospitals

How can one access the content?
Access to the contents is made through a computer connected to the Internet, with an IP address belonging to an institution that is a member of B-on, or from the outside with a VPN or Proxy connection.
The access hyperlink is http://www.b-on.pt , or one may simply google B-on.
Why do I not have access to the full text of some articles?
As previously mentioned, besides the resources it subscribes to with the main commercial publishers, B-on also includes the main free access resources to open access periodicals on its research portal, and in these cases the last 6 or 12 months are often not available.
Information about the possible embargo period of the periodical is always marked out in the “SFX” zone, which can be accessed on the button with the B-on symbol that appears after the title of the periodical during the time of the research. In the case of doubt, contact the CDI-Library.
EndNoteWeb TRAINING
Another aspect of the training that took place in the FMUL was that of the bibliographical reference manager EndNote Web, produced by Thomson Scientific and which is a part of the Web of Knowledge.
Fig. 3 EndNote Web Portal
What is the EndNote Web?
The Endnote Web is a service based on the Internet Web in order to facilitate students’, teachers’ and researchers’ work during the process of writing their research work, allowing them to:
- Organize and manage their quotation references in documents;
- Consult directly on PubMed, on the ISI Web of Knowledge, in OPAC catalogues of libraries and to import the references online;
- Organize their personal library, creating reference groups allowing the storing of up to 10,000 records for each account created;
- Locate references, going directly to the text;
- Facilitate collaboration with colleagues, creating groups for sharing references with other researchers;
- Publish the references, add notes and keywords;
- Format quotations within texts and make bibliographies according to the several different norms for quotations;
- Use the “CiteWhileYouWrite” tool in Word in order to insert references and format papers;
- Access their references, protected by passwords, anywhere where they have Internet access.
How does one create an account on EndNote Web?
In order to create an account, that is, the first time one uses EndNote Web, you should do so n a computer with an IP recognized by the Web of Knowledge. That means, inside the institutions that subscribe to this database. Access the following hyperlink and register: www.myendnoteweb.com
Then you can Access your bibliographical references from any computer with Access to the Internet, independently of where you are in Portugal or abroad.

RCAAP TRAINING
The RCAAP portal: Open Access Scientific Repository in Portugal, possesses the open access scientific contents existing in the institutional repositories of the Portuguese higher education entities and other R&D organisations.
Access to the portal is made through http://www.rcaap.pt/
This portal is a unique research point and location for access to the full texts of Portuguese scientific and academic documents, including articles in scientific magazines, communications to conferences, theses and dissertations included in the Portuguese repositories that have been formed recently.
The list of institutions with repositories included in the RCAAP portal may be consulted on: http://www.rcaap.pt/directory.jsp
The RCAAP project is also a UMIC and FCCN project, financed by the POS_C: Web of Knowledge operational Programme.
The University of Lisbon repository, integrated within the RCAAP, started to be formed with the most recent PhD and Masters theses, and as of today includes 1,033 documents.
We end with one of the slides presented at the B-on training session, which comically shows the relationship users have with the digital environment that these resources provide.
Users and the Digital Environment
(Users like electronic resources: Easy to use / Remote access without leaving home and at any time / Rapid access to information / Greater sharing and cooperation / Autonomy / Possibility of printing at home / Possibility of sending by e-mail )

In time we will divulge new training actions on these resources in the CDI - Library, with a more practical nature and with individual training on a computer.
